What To Expect

Porto Cristo
The name Port de Manacor/Porto Cristo, meaning "The Port of Manacor/The Port of Christ" given to it back in 1260 AD at the time of the Christian invasion of Mallorca, A fishing boat was found washed up on the beach containing a crucifix. Legend has it that an ox was carrying an icon of God through the town, and the ox stopped and refused to walk anymore. Hence the people saw this as a sign and the name was derived from that belief it was a clear sign that Christ wanted to be here.

Palma de Mallorca
Our Tour begins in Camí de la Escollera in front of the Cathedral of Palma. Palma was founded as a Roman camp upon the remains of a Talaiotic settlement. The city was subjected to several Vandal raids during the fall of the Western Roman Empire, then reconquered by the Bizantine Empire, then colonised by the Moors (who called it Medina Mayurqa) and, in the 13th century, by James I of Aragon.

Fab caves

This was a lovely trip. We booked via our hotel but was with the company called No Frills Excursions. I was disappointed that the age of a child ends at 12yrs so I had to pay the adult price for my child. But it is what it is so had to allow for that. We stopped at Porto Christo and had sone nice travel guide info along the way. My teen wasn’t interested in the pearls but at least meant a toilet break and a look in a gift shop. A great photo opportunity there too of the beautiful harbour. Then on to the caves which are still warm inside (compared to caves in cooler climes). We queued but it moved fast. Inside people were told no flash photography but there is enough lighting to get fabulous shots. The caves are the most formed and interesting than any I’ve seen before. Once at the end of the walk downwards there’s us a lake and seating, where we watched a very atmospheric classical musical which appeared through the darkness on a rowing boat. We opted not to wait for a boat across the lake as it literally was a queue of 100s for three boats but the walk was only a minute or so anyway. There are lots of steps up to the exit, over 100! It’s worth taking a snack but food is available, although it depends very much on the coach collection time. We did enjoy the caves and it’s a definite must see when visiting Majorca.
Unexpected beauty

With a heat wave outside the coolness of the caves was a blessing. Not suitable for prams, wheelchairs or those unsteady on their feet. Uneven flooring, and steps. It's quite dark with dim lighting to protect the caves. Absolutely fascinating though. My teen daughter and I really enjoyed our excursion.
Draco Caves a must

Fabulous caves. We'll lit and good paths. The musicians were excellent. The hike up is strenuous. It is a must see wonder.
Very nice trip for a halfday

The trip to the Drach caves was nice and we'll organized. However being only a half day trip there's no time to have lunch and we are given a very small amount of time to visit the souvenir shop from the Drach caves.
Don’t waste your money

We had high hopes for this trip but came away disappointed.

We were staying in Cala Egos and were collected first, which in itself is not a problem but we ended up collecting people from all over the place which cut short the time we had in the market down to 40 minutes. Nowhere near enough time to look around and have a coffee. The market was not very interesting either.
The second stop was to the pearl factory which was a waste of time. They are not real pearls and the stop was a waste of time.

The caves were the best part of the trip and worth a visit. Impressive caves that you walk through. The walk ends in a large cave where a quartet serenade you from a boat on the water. Lovely acoustics; would have been nice to hear a singer too. At the end there is the chance to take the boat back across the water but it is only a few minutes and the boats are packed. The coach trip gives you a time limit, so unless you want to be late back for the bus, the boat trip in the cave is not really an option anyway.

Tagged onto the end is a visit to Porto Cristo which was lovely but again too short, only one hour. Lovely beach and a little market on Sundays.

If I was doing the trip again, I would do it independently and just visit the caves, Porto Cristo and maybe take a trip on the glass bottom boats from the harbour.
